The Merchant was a man residing in the town of Kolyma. He is a con-artist. He often tried to swindle anyone gullible enough to believe the items he sold were worth the price. He originally spoke in an Australian-sounding accent, but when he was playing charades, he changed his voice to sound Hindu. He had evidently learned these tactics by reading Selling Your Wares, Without Selling Yourself: The Art of Being a Lowly Merchant and Feeling Proud of it.

The merchant had first come across Mama Pumpkin, claiming that he had knowledge about flora. He had snatched up a baby pumpkin, believing it would make him a wealthy man. Graham threw some fool's gold in the town's fountain, distracting the merchant. While the merchant snatched up the trick coins, not even realizing they were fake, Graham returned the little pumpkin to its mother. The second time he met up with Graham, he questioned about the pumpkin, and Graham said he knew nothing about it. He said that he considered pearls to be of great value, and when Graham showed him a pearl, he handed a Shell Comb in exchange for it. Believing the pearl would fetch him a fortune back home, the man left the town, never to be heard from again.
