The Great Mountains are a mountain range in the World of Daventry (KQGS). It is based on the Great Mountains from classic King's Quest series.

Background[]

The Great Mountains are a range that encompasses much the center of the continent in the Midwestern Hemisphere. The Kingdom of Daventry (KQGS) lies down in a deep valley high in the mountains.

The northern edge of the mountains lie near Serenia (KQGS), Llewdor (KQGS), and Eldritch (KQGS), while it’s southern edge lies near Tanalore (KQGS), Kolyma (KQGS) and Tamir (KQGS). The Serenia woods lie somewhere along it’s northern flank between the lands.

It may be the same as the Eastern mountains (or at least connected to them), which is the range where Avalon (KQGS) is also located. The mountains are connected to and/or part of the same range as the Eastern mountains. Avalon (KQGS) and Scandia are also located in the mountains.

When the Hobblepots were young they were just outside the caves, up in the Great Mountains. Chester Hobblepot wrestled his lunch away from something...They believed was the eldest bear or the barest elder (naked and very old). Although it may have just been a Yeti (KQGS) or a Were-bear (KQGS).

It is the home of Wedzel wolves, yetis, ice orcs, and squirrels. Later it was the home of the Icebellas. It’s also the home of Crystal dragon (KQGS). It is also the home of Bill (KQGS) and [[Susan

Lands[]

Note: All the major lands appear to either located in valleys on the mountains or border it.

Behind the scenes[]

The Great Mountains (and Eastern mountains) appear to inspired on, and consolidation of all the “great mountains” seen in King’s Quest from KQ1, KQ2, KQ3, KQ5, KQ7, KQ8, the Companion and the novels, much in same way Infinite Desert merges together deserts from KQ3, KQ5, KQ7, and the the novels, and the Enchanted Isles (KQGS) seemingly combines together a number of islands from the original series together.

The Great Mountains are mentioned by Chester and Muriel in King's Quest Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember. In the context they are discussing their honeymoon there, and mention the caves in the mountain (the caves likely being a reference to the Abominable Snowman's cave or the series of caves down to Daventry). They mention either seeing a bear or mostly naked man. This is of course a reference to the caves explored in KQ3, and the other reference may or may not be a joke reference to the Abominable Snowman. This may also be more of a reference to the King's Quest Companions, as that is the source that names the mountains in KQ3 as the Great Mountains (other sources call it the Snowy Mountains or the Mountain Range). It is also may be a reference to KQ5, and in Chapter 2: Rubble Without a Cause, the mountains of Serenia are called the Eastern mountains. However it’s possible they are one and the same.

Part of it lies apparently roughly between Avalon (KQGS), Tanalore (KQGS) were the Ice Palace (KQGS) (Ice Tower) settled at end of chapter 3 and is located in both paths in chapter 4. With the tower in the mountains near to Serenia (KQGS). Both Tanalore and Serenia appear to lie west and east of Daventry respectively and the northern edge both lies near southern edge of Serenia.

In Chapter 2 Graham travels through mountains in and other regions said to be in the Enchanted Isles (KQGS) of Kolyma (KQGS) before he reaches Hagatha's Tower. Surprisingly the backgrounds resemble the same mountains, and forests seen in Kingdom of Daventry (KQGS), Avalon (KQGS), and the location of Ice Palace (KQGS) at the end of chapter 2 and during both paths of chapter 3. There is no explanation for this re-use of scenery. It’s not clear if the region of the “Enchanted Isles” existed on an island itself or is part of the mainland continent or island of Daventry (KQGS). If the latter it could very well be another section of the Great Mountains. The file names don’t usually offer any information except referring to the assets as “Mountains”, or naming individual screens. In the end it’s not clear if Enchanted Isles encompasses a region that includes islands off the coast of Daventry continent or if it also includes parts of main land continent/island itself. It doesn’t appear to include the Kingdom of Daventry itself which Graham traveled to the Enchanted Islands from.

Alternatively it’s possible he worked his way to the enchanted islands from the mountains on the continent of Daventry and crossed the seas at some point to reach the island where the tower was located (the tower is so tall it can be seen from the mountains and forests across the sea). In any case during events of the game once the tower gets moving it moves through various regions including off the cost of Tanalore, through Avalon (…or vice versa depending on who you choose), until it finally frozen in a region in the Great Mountains between both nations to south of the kingdom of Daventry, and just north of Kolyma.
