The lyre is a small, and ancient, string instrument cousin to the harp. The harp is often confused with its smaller, and equally ancient cousin. Like the harp, the lyre was played in ancient Egypt and Assyria.
The lyre was a famous intrument played by Orpheus. He once played it in Hades, the underworld, the land of the dead in an attempt to rescue his love. It is said that Pluto's mood was softened, and that he agreed with Orpheus' request, if for a little while. It is believed that Orpheus' music, if he had the chance to play for him could affect the mood of Samhain of the Realm of the Dead.
